FAQ

On this page I will answer some of the most common questions I am asked by people looking to buy their first chinchiila.

1: Can chinchillas live on their own?

Chinchillas can live on their own as long as they get plenty of attention from their owner. They like company so if this is not provided by a companion then you must provide it by spending time with your chinchilla.

2: Which sex makes the better pet?

Both males and females make brilliant pets.Personality depends very much on the individual chinchilla, not on the sex.

The only thing a female chinchilla will do that a male won't is spray but this is only if she is provoked or feels threatened.

3: Can two females live together?

Despite some books stating differently females are perfectly ok living together. Ocassionally chinchillas can fall out but this can happen with males, females and even breeding pairs but usually once bonded they live together very happily.

4: Can two males live together?

Yes two males can live together but not in the close vicinity of females.

When reaching maturity males can fight if they smell females coming into season so two males living together should not be in the same room as females.

5: Can I put another chinchilla straight in with my other chinchilla?

NO! Chinchillas need careful introductions before attempting to put them in the same cage together. Chinchillas are territorial and serious fight can occur if intros are not done properly.

6: I don't have a proper carrier,will a cardboard box be ok?

NO! Chinchillas are chewers and would get through a cardboard box in seconds.

No chinchilla will leave my premises unless suitable carriers are provided.

7:What treats do you feed

I feed mini shredded wheat as treats. They are healthy and chins love them.

Raisins are ok but high in sugar so should only be fed in moderation.I tend to keep them for bribery only lol.
